Enhance operational safety in cold climates – next generation of wireless ON-BLADE sensors
Published: March 19, 2025
Updated: April 11, 2025
Advanced monitoring technologies are crucial for wind turbine operators worldwide to optimize efficiency and minimize downtime of their turbines. At EOLOGIX-PING, we continuously innovate to ensure wind turbines reach their full potential. Our new, optimized generation of wireless ON-BLADE sensors (WBS) is setting a new benchmark in blade-based ice detection.
In this article we describe what changes with the advanced generation.
What changes?
At EOLOGIX-PING, we always prioritize close collaboration with wind farm operators and turbine manufacturers to develop innovative solutions that meet the highest industry standards and customer needs. Based on this collaborative approach and the goal of providing maximum value to our customers, we have continuously advanced the wireless ON-BLADE ice detection sensor. The new generation features enhanced resistance to environmental influences, optimized material utilization, and broader compatibility across various turbine models from nearly all major wind turbine manufacturers worldwide.
In addition to hardware advancements, the software has been upgraded with enhanced analytics capabilities, enabling even better operational support worldwide.
The key advancements include:
- Optimized power management: ensuring consistent performance and increased durability throughout its operational cycle. The results of the test installation during the last winter season confirmed the longer uptime of the new WBS on wind turbines in very cold climates (in the extreme north).
- Refined design for increased reliability: a robust construction that withstands the toughest operating environments and ensures a longer sensor lifespan. As proven in the laboratory and in the field, it can withstand even direct impact from ice and lightning.
“By the end of 2024, we had successfully installed over 500 sensors in cold climate regions and at high-altitude, exposed alpine locations with extreme weather conditions – delivering remarkable results. The new generation has proven to be highly reliable even in the most challenging environments, exceeding expectations.“

Wind turbine operators benefit from the advanced generation:
- Reduced maintenance efforts thanks to improved durability and energy management.
- Extended sensor lifespan even under extreme environmental conditions.
- Consistent and accurate performance due to optimized energy efficiency.
Seamless integration and DNV certification
The new generation of the ice detection systems is designed for both new installations and retrofits. It remains fully compatible with standardized interfaces that enable seamless and fast integration into existing turbine control systems without additional turbine data. Additionally, DNV certification guarantees that our sensors meet standards, providing operators with confidence in their reliability and accuracy.
Conclusion
With this new and optimized generation of our wireless ON-BLADE sensors, we continue to push the boundaries of wind turbine monitoring, ensuring that operators can maximize energy output while maintaining operational reliability.
