Fighting ice on wind turbines with precision: How smart blade heating can transform winter operations
Winter conditions in cold-climate regions and extended cold seasons bring unique challenges for wind farm operators: ice accumulation on rotor blades reduces power production, forces shutdowns, and creates serious safety risks. While blade heating systems have been used for decades, efficiency, strategy, and precision remain key to achieving reliable and cost-effective winter operations. Industry experts from Capstone Infrastructure Corporation, EOLOGIX-PING, Siemens Gamesa, and Weather Guard Lightning Tech will share new insights into how advanced heating solutions can prevent ice on wind turbines and transform turbine performance in cold climates. This webinar is an on-demand webinar!
What you will learn in our on-demand webinar
In this 60 minutes on-demand webinar, you will gain practical insights into how operators can prepare for and manage winter icing challenges with blade heating.
Understanding the problem
Why icing is more than a seasonal nuisance, and how it impacts safety, compliance, and profitability.
Different heating approaches
Pros and cons of hot-air circulation inside blades vs. electro-thermal blade elements.
Making the business case
Thresholds, revenue impact, and when to take action.
From assessment to action
How operators evaluate icing losses, and what to do when the problem suddenly becomes more severe.
Regulatory perspective
What NAERC rules mean for operators — and why icing needs more defined solutions.
The smarter solution
How wireless ON-BLADE sensors enable precise heating, detecting icing early, activating heating only when needed, and improving reliability.
Efficient operation strategies
Reducing heating costs, preventing overheating, and extending system lifetime.
Practical takeaways
Lessons and strategies for both new installations and retrofits to improve efficiency, cut costs, and extend turbine uptime in cold climates.
