About the customer
In total, STAWAG Energie already has more than 20 wind farms with a total of 79 wind turbines connected to the grid – the most recent have been built in the north of Aachen, Monschau, Simmerath and Linnich. In total, STAWAG Energie already generates more than 600 million kilowatt hours annually in its own green electricity plants.

In this customer project five wind turbines (Enercon E115) have been equipped with the :RESTART ICE system. The aim was to minimize downtimes by using the system, which measures directly on the blade surface. The EOLOGIX-PING system reacts quickly and accurately.
In order to minimize downtimes due to icing, STAWAG invested in a rotor blade-based system. In addition to EOLOGIX-PING two other providers have been evaluated. A clear decision went in favour of the :RESTART ICE system. The reasons for this are simply explained:
- positive performance audit of the commercial department,
- simple system setup and 100% maintenance-free,
- easy installation – as you just have to stick the sensors on the blade.
The collaboration with EOLOGIX-PING was a good decision – the support was very good
By law, the Monschau-Höfen wind farm is obliged to stop the wind turbines in case of safety-relevant ice accumulation. Prior to the installation of the EOLOGIX-PING system, an ice detection system based on the power curve was used. This system performed very rough shutdowns and did not allow an automatic restart. When the system had to be restarted when there was no ice anymore, it was necessary to drive to the wind turbine all the time, perform an inspection and then restart the wind turbine manually.
In order to reduce the effort and minimize downtime, we decided to invest in the rotor blade-based system :RESTART ICE, which measures directly on the blade surface and is also DNV-GL certified for automatic restart.
Decisive drivers for the system were the economic efficiency and the simple design of the system with tremendous advantages such as easy installation, maintenance-free operation and measurement of ice thickness in different levels.

After only one winter in operation, the technical operations manager Fotios Chitzios was able to confirm that the EOLOGIX-PING system restarts the system very well and very quickly when there is no ice. After a more precise evaluation, the additional yield can even be evaluated.
